ABSTRACT: Ayurveda is an old traditional healing system. Focuses mainly on the patients rather than disease. In the modern times, stress stands as the single and most influential cause for a wide range of diseases. The main aim of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of a person on the level of physical as well as mental. It is estimated that 80% of all modern diseases have their origin in stress. The diseases linked to stress includes  heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and even cancer. Concept of Ayurveda, Yoga, Meditation and a balanced diet may play an important role in relieving stress effectively. The concept of stress problems of mind and these determine Ayurveda is guided best treatment.

Introduction: Today stress has become an inevitable and the most unwanted companion of civilization stress is basic element of various human diseases and mental illness. Stress is a term that refers to the sum of the physical, mental, and emotional strains or tensions on a person.  Stress is also called anxity, tensions etc. Feelings of stress in humans result from interactions between person and their environment that are perceived as straining or exceeding their adaptive capacities and threatening their will being. According to the world health organization (WHO), major depressive disorders (MDD) will account for the second major illness in the world by the year 2020. Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. However to much stress, or a strong response to stress is harmful. It can set you for general poor health as well as specific physical or psychological illness like infections, heart diseases etc. The element of perception indicates that human stress responses reflect differences in personality as well as differences in. Physical strength or health.

A stressor is defined as a stimulus or event that provokes a stress response in an organism stressors can be categorized as acute or chronic, and as external or internal to the organism.

  • Loss of sex drive
  • Frequent colds or flu

Behavioral symptoms

  • Eating more or less

  • Using alcohol, cigarettes or drugs to relax

According to Ayurveda Acharya Charaka  described eight essential psychological factors that are negatively affected in various ways in all psychiatric disorders (Manasa Roga). The Psychopathological condition is a function of these factors, which are mana (mind), buddhi (Memory), Smriti (Past experience), Sajna Jnana (Orientation and responsiveness), Bhakti (divotion), Shila (habits), Chestha (Psychomotor activity) and achara (conduct). Compared to other major ayurvedic  text like susrutha samhita and Atang hrudayam Acharya charak gives more  emphasis  to the view of like as a self-aware field of pure consciousness and natural intelligence where the knower and the known are one. Ayurveda is very effective for stress management and to encourage body and soul to achive composure of the mind.

The Panchakarma Measures:

  1. Vamana – Induced therapeutic vomiting
  2. Virechana – Purgation though therapeutic laxative, providing symptomatic relief of mental illness
  3. Vasti – Medicated enema therapy
  4. Nasya – Nasal Medication
  5. Shirodhara – Medicated herbal oils, milk, Butter milk are poured on the forehead. It reduce anxity, depression and mental stress and Rejuvenates the central nervous system
  6. Shirovasti – Keeping herbal medicated oil in a cap fitted on head

Ayurvedic Medicines for stress – Ayurveda classifies herbs with a stabilizing effect on the mind  as “Medhya Rasayana”. These herbs promote the intellect and deeply nourish the neurological tissues. They are nervine tonics. These medicines act as specific molecular nutrient for the brain, promoting better mental health that leads to the alleviation of behavioral disorders. The medhya Rasayanas enhance biological nourishment of the brian, producing tranquility of mind, concentration and improved memory.
