Take Care of Biological Clock - Stages of Circadian Rhythm by Veda5 Ayurveda and Yoga Wellness Retreats in Kerala Goa Rishikesh

If we ask anyone, how he or she likes to spend holiday, 99 out of 100 would say, they like to sleep till late! The fascination of going late to bed and getting up late in the morning is quite universal. People from urban areas and industrialized countries are particularly addicted to the lifestyle that includes sleeping late after midnight and rising late in the morning.

While talking about the ideal Ayurvedic daily regimen, the first order that ancient Indian Ayurveda experts have issued is to get up early in the morning. Though many so-called ‘modern’ individuals would be averse to this, the assertion of Ayurveda experts is based on scientific understanding.

Natural Biological Clock

Modern researchers have proved that all living beings are governed by a natural biological clock. This clock regulates each & every function of the organism. When it comes to the humans, nature has organized this clock like a 24 hour cycle. This is called Circadian rhythm. Due to this rhythm, functions like feeling hungry, passing urine & stool, feeling sleepy etc. take place regularly in every 24 hours in human beings. While old cells keep dying in body, they are replaced by new cells. This is a continuous process which too is controlled by the circadian rhythm.

Light Stimuli

A particular nucleus in brain’s hypothalamus houses body’s biological clock. And what is important is that this clock is influenced by the light stimuli relayed by optic nerves. When timing of sunrise comes closer, optic nerves send message of upcoming light to the brain. These signals prompt the pineal gland to stop secretion of melatonin hormone. Melatonin hormone is responsible for inducing sleep. When its secretion is halted, the person starts awakening from sleep. This awakening triggers further physiological events such as urge to get out of bed, pass urine & stool and eat or drink something. After sunset, reverse process occurs. Messages of darkness emerging from optic nerves stimulate secretion of melatonin hormone from pineal gland. This slows down many metabolic processes and induces sleep.

Why Daily Regimen is Important

Now if a person refuses to go to bed and stubbornly keeps busy with other things, then it hampers body’s biological clock. The same thing happens if the person continues to sleep even after morning. Persistence of such habits sends body’s biological clock completely out of rhythm. Even simple functions like hunger, thirst and defecation do not take place on time in such person. Process of producing of new cells also gets delayed. All this leads to various types of derangements and impairments resulting in different kinds of diseases. If a person wants to avoid such chaos, then the simplest way is to respect body’s biological clock and cooperate with it, something that Ayurveda experts have said right at the beginning of Ayurvedic daily regimen!
